This Thursday, March 16, we are hosting the first session of Entrepreneurship 100: Conversations Series 2. The topic of this session is Social Entrepreneurship, and we are excited to have an all-star lineup of guests.

Heather Payne, Luke Anderson and Ilana Ben-Ari headshots

Heather Payne is a champion of digital literacy education. In 2011, she started Ladies Learning Code, now a national non-profit serving Canadians in over 20 cities across the country. In 2012, in response to requests from Ladies Learning Code participants, she founded HackerYou to bring longer-term coding training to Toronto. She now operates HackerYou full-time and serves over 600 students a year. In 2013, she was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women for her work exposing women and girls to programming and technology.”

Luke Anderson is an ardent accessibility advocate and engineer. His frustration with the inaccessibility of the city for those in wheelchairs and other mobility needs led to the creation of the StopGap Foundation. The main focus of the foundation is the Ramp Project, a volunteer-run campaign that creates awareness about barriers in the built environment. Luke is not only restructuring stepped entryways but also Canadians’ understanding about disability and barriers in our built environments.

Ilana Ben-Ari is a toy designer turned social entrepreneur. As the founder of Twenty One Toys, she transformed her thesis project into the company’s first product, The Empathy Toy. Originally designed for visually impaired students and their sighted classmates, it is now used as a tool to teach Empathy to anyone and everyone. She can currently be found at the Centre for Social Innovation in Toronto working on the upcoming Failure Toy, or running around the world teaching schools and offices how to teach empathy with toys.
